If your business is local, start with your Google Business Profile: it is what appears on Maps. To show up there and rank higher, see our guide on how to appear on Google Maps.
- 01
The same details everywhere
Name, address and phone number written the same way on your website, your Google Business Profile, your professional association’s register and every directory. Google asks for your profile name to match the name on your signage, your website and your stationery.
Google Business Profile guidelines - 02
A few good ones, not many
Google cites links from low-quality directories as an example of link spam. Signing up to hundreds of websites that nobody visits does not help and can count against you.
Google spam policies - 03
Be wary of anyone who guarantees rankings
Google warns that nobody can guarantee you the top spot, and also warns about messages claiming your website “is not in the main directories”. Pay for advertising if it is worth it to you, not for promises.
“Do you need an SEO?”, from Google - 04
Review them once a year
You change your phone number, opening hours or address and the directories keep the old details. Note down where you are listed and with which account.
Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to what people ask us before we start.
Does listing your business in directories help SEO?
The ones that matter, yes: your Google Business Profile is the foundation of local rankings, and professional association registers provide details that clients can check. Mass sign-ups do not help. Google considers links from low-quality directories to be spam.
Which directories are free?
The Google, Bing and Apple profiles are free, and so is the basic listing in the general directories on this list. With professional association registers there is nothing to buy: you appear when you join. What you pay for are the advertising options, some voluntary registers and platforms such as TheFork, which charges per booking.
Do ChatGPT or Gemini use these directories?
Gemini uses public Google Maps data to look up businesses, and Microsoft recommends Bing Places so that your details can appear in AI-generated answers. Microsoft also states that Bing provides services to ChatGPT. There is no official information about the rest. AI tools search the web, so your details should be correct wherever you appear.
Do I need to be on all of them?
No. Start with Google, Bing and Apple. Then your professional association’s register if you have one, and one or two directories for your sector. Better a few listings with identical details than many half-finished ones.
How often is this list updated?
We checked it on 1 October 2026 on each directory’s website, including the cost of listing. Prices change: if you see outdated information, email us at [email protected].
Shall we look at your case?
We check your Google Business Profile, the directories for your sector and what AI tools answer when someone searches for what you do in your city.
